The Big Bang Machine

| May 18, 2010

If you haven’t heard of CERN’s experiment being dubbed the ‘biggest science experiment’ in history, I think it’s worth checking out.

A particle accelerator called the Large Hadron Collider(LHC) is essentially going to recreate, within human experimental limitations, the conditions of the beginning of our universe, the Big Bang. It will accomplish this by sending beams of subatomic particles in opposite directions in the accelerator, as the particles travel they gain energy and once they collide head on the physicists will be able to analyze what happens. One of the main goals in recreating this scenario is that the results will be able to challenge and or validate theories such as but not limited to the phenomenon of ‘the Higgs’ in hopes to create a more holistic Standard Model of particle physics.

There has been extensive media around this topic due to the nature of the experiment. One of the extreme speculations that has arisen is the creation of a black hole when the particles collide, this is impossible as a threat to the earth asCERN explains. But some media has run away with even the mention of black holes and now speculation that the LHC is going to cause the world to end is all over youtube depicting- the earth being swallowed by a black hole.

Along with the news casts (CNN) and extremists views I found a musical rendition that does a good job at explaining what the LHC is and what it can possibly discover. Check it out. It’s a rap.
